Sonnets on Lost Love

This begins a chapter on on lost love, for the human condition is mindful of terrible loss, abandonment by the Other, surely, inexhorably, with a certainty severed by volition or borne of mortality.

Lost Love

Love Is Ephemeral

It makes little difference how loss comes, one will move on and the other, abide.

The cold, stark reality of inevitable loss deserves reflection for its hard lesson teaches us to hold present love as precious and to revel in its possession while love is yet ours to celebrate.

These two love sonnets are sad, they direct our attention to loss in the hope that we will find delight in our beloved today, capture the passing joy of his or her presence, savor the here and now, and value the life entrusted to our care.

On Dinner with a Widowed Friend

In recent years the four of us would dine
Some small talk, lubricated with some wine
Expounding on the trivia of life
Recounting fleeting joy and bitter strife.

Last night, our table numbered only three
Around us, other patrons that we see,
Their gray heads bobbing as someone recalls
Glassy seas perturbed by summer squalls

And here and there, exists an empty chair
Bespeaking of an interrupted pair
As with the three of us this summer night
Persisting in a common social rite
I wonder what the two remaining do
When our table count's reduced to two?

Sonnet of Grieving

That milestone up ahead denotes our life
A single verb, on purpose, as your wife
We've traveled hand-in-hand along the road
A winding path bestrewn with thorn and goad.

I've tripped on gnarled root, but you've been there
To lift me in this lifetime that we share
And up ahead I see a granite stone
Beyond which one of us must go alone.

God gave us to each other decades past
It's hard to comprehend that it won't last
The form that travels on is in a mist
Without the Other, does that form exist?
Or is it just a husk, an empty shell
Where desiccated memories still dwell?

Life is a chimera, when love is lost, it's too late, so cherish your beloved today.

The mindfulness of lost love brings appreciation for the beloved for sometimes, love is sad.

On a brighter note, here are brand new love quotes that say "I love you."
